5 Ways to Tweak Your WordPress Blog

A slow website never really reaches its potential to unlock an unprecedented audience. Think of it this way. Would you like to wait for a website to load its content or just open another one that loads instantly? Of course you will pick the latter. There is no doubt that WordPress is the most popular platform for bloggers and aspiring businesses that want to create an engaging. But if your WordPress content takes too much time to load and is poorly designed on top of that, then you are not making good use of it. However, there are ways to tweak your WordPress blog to make sure it directs traffic.

1) Hosting Plan
If your server takes too long to process MySQL command and HTTP requests, then you should have a response time test with similar blog websites in your niche. This can help you determine the average response time. However, it is not necessary that your blog’s poor response time is associated with your hosting company. When you use a shared hosting plan, you will likely face downtime in loading as there will be hundred other websites hosted through the same server. Hence, choose a hosting plan that can manage the traffic on your blog efficiently.

2) WordPress Themes
A poorly coded design that employs many images will only add to the slow response time on your blog. There are WordPress themes that are in megabytes in size. But then there are other themes on WordPress that are elegant and attractive, and small in size at the same time. Hence, choose a design optimized for computers, smart phones, and tablets. Google and other search engines will favor designs that have quick responsiveness as all pages will have the same URL. Then there are adaptive designs that are phone friendly and improve the user experience.

3) Plug-ins
Obsolete plugins are one of the main causes of why your WordPress blog is slow. You should ask yourself whether you really need that plugin or not. But the fact is, the number of plugins that you install does not necessarily affect your blog’s performance speed. Only a few plugins have bad coding, persistent updating of your WordPress blogs, and external server calls. But these plugins can significantly affect the responsiveness of your blog. Plugins like P3 Profiler can determine the plugins that add load time to your blog.

4) WordPress Trash System
It’s there for a reason. Old blogs, comments, posts, etc. can add a lot of unnecessary load on your WordPress blog. Make sure you delete obsolete content to free up the loading space on your blog. It works like the recycle bin, so if you accidently delete something, you can always recover it.

5) Images
Images are wonderful additions in any blog to break up text and add more meaning to content. But then, they do take a lot of storage. But my simply optimizing the images for internet before uploading them, you can have compressed versions of those images without sacrificing quality. Remember that a fast loading website or blog will rank higher in search engine results. Hence, optimizing images can be a make or break situation.
